Gout is an acidic condition in the body characterised by inflamed and painful joints caused by high levels of uric acid in the blood, which cystallise out into needle-like shards and deposit in the joints. It often affects the large joint of the big toe but can also occur in other joints such as the joints of the feet, ankles, knees, hands and elbows and is more common in adult men. The joint becomes red, inflammed and very painful especially with movement but also at rest making it difficult to get off to sleep. Uric acid is a metabolic by-product, naturally produced when the body utilizes purines. High levels of purines are found in foods such as red meat, liver, anchovies, mackerel, sardines, shellfish, and alcohol. Normally, uric acid remains dissolved in the blood to be excreted by the kidneys in urine but in some individuals, over-production or under excretion (or both) can result in high levels of uric acid in the blood. Gout often appears to be hereditary, but other factors such as obesity, increasing age, high alcohol intake, kidney dysfunction, certain medications, sudden weight loss, and a diet high in purines can increase a persons susceptibility to an attack of gout.
