Early composition of the the infants gut flora is known to have an impact not only on digestive system function, but also on the development of the immune system. A baby's flora is influenced by a number of factors. It was once thought that the digestive system of unborn infants is relatively sterile, but recent research suggests that microbial colonisation of the gut begins when the unborn baby swallows amniotic fluid containing microflora from the mother's gut. Unfortunately if the mother's flora is imbalanced due to poor diet, stress or antibiotic use this will be passed on to the infant before he or she is even born.
Microbial gut colonisation is then strongly influenced by the method of delivery, with the journey through the birth canal resulting in significantly faster and more diverse beneficial micro flora colonisation. These flora migrate to the bowel and proliferate in response to breast milk which supports the growth of beneficial flora, in particular Bifidobacterium species. Conversely infants born by caesarean are slower to colonise and have higher populations of undesirable bacteria such as Clostridium.
